Today was Day 30! We did it!

30 Days of Vancouver is was a daily drawing project to capture life in different parts of the city, and collect material for my upcoming book of SneakyArt.

Knowing that the good weather would lure them out of their homes, I went to draw tiny people at the sea wall. Since moving out of downtown, I have not been back to visit this part of the city.

While we lived in downtown, all my morning runs began and ended at the sea wall. I have loved running along the water to loop Stanley Park (in one direction), and I have enjoyed equally the path that loops (in the other direction) around Olympic Village.

I walked along the sea wall until I reached the now-infamous English Bay Barge. It is a shipping barge that strayed into English Bay during a king-tide event and ultimately crashed into the rocks.

It has been six months but the city has not yet managed to safely remove the barge. It is perilously close to being declared a British Columbia cultural hotspot. It might already be the cheapest real estate for young single professionals in the city.

These are the last 3 days of 30 Days of Vancouver.

30 Days of Vancouver is my daily drawing project to capture moments of beauty in ordinary places on ordinary days in this part of the world I now call home.

On Day 28, I was speaking with my aunt on the phone when I left home. Wrapped up in the conversation, I missed a turn and wandered off in a direction I hadn’t planned. Lucky me!

The moment I realized and turned to go back, I was confronted by a large tree. A person walked underneath it, dwarfed by its enormous height. And an old question popped into my mind. I had asked it many years ago (in 2019) of my workshop participants at the USk Chicago Seminar -

“How tall is a building if there are no people to enter it?”

Another one was this - “Why is a cafe?”

Today the question framed itself another way. It said -

What makes a tree tall? And what makes a person tiny?

I sat down on the bench and decided to find the answer. It is, like so many things, a matter of perspective.

🌲 I do not like to draw trees

As an ink artist who is also impatient, I lack the energy to depict trees with the meticulous detail they require. So I find ways around it. (More on technique soon!)

I was halfway through the drawing when a person walked into the scene. And instantly, I knew that this had become their scene.

💡 Here’s a composition tip - Always leave room for magic.

So it goes.

Today was Day 27 of 30 Days of Vancouver. I walked up and down Granville St in downtown Vancouver, watching tiny people play out their lives. They were playing hard at being busy and did not notice me standing there. But it is also likely that I did not stand out very much, because this stretch of downtown has more than its share of eccentric people.

Talking to Herself. She walked past me and waited at the intersection, muttering under her breath all the while. Bemused pedestrians shook their heads. But she hunched her shoulders and waited for the light to turn green.

I wondered if she was unwell, but I think she just got too used to wearing a mask over her mouth.

I like masks for this reason too. It’s the only way to have a proper conversation with myself in public places.

(Top row, middle) She arched an eyebrow as her boyfriend kept on walking. Ten feet ahead, he realized she was not with him any longer, turned around, and shrugged his shoulders. She nodded towards the boutique store. He sighed. They went in.

This is Day 26 of 30 Days of Vancouver, a project to draw every day in this new part of the world that I call home.

I went to Commercial Drive — the neighbourhood also known as Little Italy — to sit inside Moja Coffee. This place was recommended on an r/vancouver thread where I solicited a list of locations from Vancouver-based redditors.

Moja Coffee was full of interesting, tiny people. Other fascinating tiny people dropped in while I was there to take away their coffees.

Last night, I listened to an episode of the Philosophize This podcast, about Ralph Waldo Emerson. His ideas about self-reliance are playing on my mind. With the quote - “Imitation is suicide.” - he refers to living a life whose values are copied from the things other people say and do, instead of deciding for yourself.

Yoga Mat

I had to draw very quickly to capture this one. So quickly that I did not realize I was drawing a yoga mat until I finished drawing. The eventual moment of realization decided the title of this piece.

With their own mug

I also like to take my own mug to cafes because when I draw, I forget all about my coffee. It’s the only way I have found to keep the coffee warm while I sketch. It is strange that cafes do not offer to re-heat your coffee.

We are running the Vancouver Sun Run 10k tomorrow. So today we went to BC Place to pick up the runner’s bib and info sheets. Afterwards, we sat in Coopers Park to enjoy the sun and live among other people also enjoying the sun.

I went viral on TikTok today. I have been posting 2-3 videos per day this month, as part of the 30 Days of Vancouver project. Incidentally, this is also the popular advice on how to break out as a TikTok creator. It helps the algorithm “understand your channel” and that makes it better at recommending you to an appropriate audience. Tiktok runs on a completely different algorithm from Instagram and I have done my least to learn about it because to do so needs me to spend more and more time on TikTok and … I am not young people anymore.

I have learned a few things that are useful. I have faced a ton of unsolicited media in order to do so. I write something soon. Anyway,

30 Days of Vancouver is a daily drawing project to explore my new home - Vancouver, British Columbia - and find many TinyPeople.

I also left behind this postcard for a stranger to find. I put it behind the bench I sat at, sticking out of the soft soil. I wonder if it was found!

Public libraries are fascinating places. They are used by all kinds of people for all kinds of things - not only books!

It took me ~40 minutes to get to the downtown branch of the Vancouver Public Library. On the way I listened to Roman Mars on the 99PI podcast, speaking about how libraries digitized in the early 90s.

I like the different ways that private life expresses itself in public spaces. The library is a unique public space because it used by so many different people for their own reasons.

At every table, there are people reading something they could not otherwise own or access. But just as many people are here not* for what’s on the shelves. Some are here because it’s quiet. Some for the free wifi, some because it’s warm.

Here’s what I think it is:

There are few places in a city today that let you simply be, that let you derive a value - knowledge, safety, space, quiet, water, wifi - without extracting payment.

I also made this drawing.

I left it behind for a stranger to find.

It’s a practice of “art abandonment” (I just joined the FB group!) where artists leave their work for strangers to find and take away. I am doing it for reasons of catharsis. More about this soon.

It is good to give away things. I like to give art away sometimes. I send it right out into the vast expanse of our indifferent universe, with all the dark matter and cosmic rays. I imagine it travelling many lightyears along the infinite fabric of space and time. I imagine it seeing many things.

There is also the chance that someone might find it.

For them, I imagine what it was like to spot it. I imagine their look of surprise when they flip it over.

It is good to give art away because it lets me feel I am in control of my work. But also, art is meant to be shared with other people. It is good to reinforce that principle from time to time.

No one had picked it up in the 5 minutes I waited at the bus-stop across the street. I wonder if someone has seen it by now!

I also drew the day’s TinyPeople from that bench. There were people out for sunshine and groceries. There were several gaggles of high-school students. There were runners and cyclists travelling along the Arbutus Greenway. Kerrisdale looked beautiful and I took the time to observe the little things of beauty on this page.

There is a construction site near my home. I have been wanting to draw the workers for a long time. Today was just the right day to do it.

Can you see the effect of the solitary rain drop that made it to my page? It’s the worker on the top-right. I felt the drop hit the page, looked at what it did, and smiled.

I love this small splotch of ink. It is a record of a moment in time. This splotch will remain forever on the page, like a signature of that drop of water. A drop of water that has traveled many thousands of miles, carried by ocean winds high up in the sky, until it was suddenly shed by its cloud and separated from its fellows.

The journey of this drop, the history of its water, ended on my page today.

It has been raining since last night. I woke up early, had coffee, looked out of the window, and went back to sleep. It’s that kind of day.

As the season becomes warmer, people spend less time inside cafes. They prefer to meet outdoors for every moment under the sun is precious in this part of the world.

But whenever it rains, cafes become interesting places again.

I am fascinated by the business of private lives in public spaces. Every cafe is like a collision of worlds, a locus in space and time where life comes to intersect with other life.

The job of the Sneaky Artist is to bear witness to fleeting moments of accidental art spontaneously created in this flex of everyday life.

“They don’t have San Pellegrino,” he said, returning after a couple of minutes. He sighed deeply in disappointment for dramatic effect.

But his mother saw through the ruse.

She always did.

This time he sighed for real.

ZIPPING UP

It isn’t going to stop raining any time soon, she said to herself. If the weather apps ever got anything right, it was bad news. She was counting on the caramel latte to improve her mood.

I have been reading a lot about existentialism and the works of Simone de Beauvoir.

On Day 15, I went out to draw with one of my favourite books.

The book is - Slaughterhouse-Five " by Kurt Vonnegut.

The protagonist is Billy Pilgrim, who, after being a POW in World War 2, comes “unstuck in time”.

I walked to the busy intersection at Cambie and W 41st Ave for today’s drawing. It was a bright and sunny day!

I’M LISTENING TO A DRAFT OF MY NEXT EPISODE, WITH ELEANOR DOUGHTY. WE ARE NOW SPEAKING ABOUT THE 80-20 RULE, AKA THE PARETO PRINCIPLE.

I LOVE THE PHENOMENON KNOWN AS THE 80-20 (OR 20-80) RULE BECAUSE IT CAN BE APPLIED IN MANY WAYS.

I used to describe SneakyArt as art I made while being sneaky in my environment. But over time I have come to realize I am doing something entirely else.

🗓 Day 13

I sat on the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery, facing W Georgia. The square in front of the art gallery is a popular public space for community events, including fairs, demonstrations, and protests. I have been here before to look at the works of local artists, taste food from local vendors.

In the Day 13 list of sights and sounds, a religious organization handed out flyers on VAG Square. As the air grew brisk, and the sun played hide-n-seek, tourists distinguished themselves from seasoned residents in attire, gait, and general demeanour. Some notes on my page.

It had rained all morning, except when the rain was also joined by hail. I pushed going out for as long as I could, looking wistfully out the window in front of my desk, until I realized things were not going to change.

If it were any other day, I would not have gone out at all. But this is a daily drawing challenge, and that means pushing myself.

I am glad I did.

Despite the weather, I sit outside on the side patio. My fingers are going numb…

I read this about running too. Go out to run on the coldest day of the year. Convince yourself that you can do it. I am only applying it to art, and some rain.

So, having come out to draw on a day I would have stayed in, I now have this — a page of SneakyArt I would not have gotten any other way.

🗓 Day 11

I went up on the #15 bus, then walked along Broadway Ave to get to Gene Coffee Bar, which occupies a triangular space at a curious fork on Main St. It’s a unique location where the narrow triangular seating area gives a wide view of two busy streets. A fertile ground for TinyPeople!

Today, I sketched while occasionally pausing to read from my current book (The Story of Philosophy by Will Durant). I am reading about the French writer and philosopher Voltaire.

💬 Telling Tiny Stories Together

One reason I love drawing TinyPeople is that in their simplicity they are instantly recognizable to all of us. We recognize them as placeholders from our own world — someone we may have met, or passed by, or casually noticed from a distance. Each figure symbolizes someone distinct and unique in our lives.

So this week I want to play a little storytelling game. It’s an easy game with simple rules. I think it will be a lot of fun.

Here’s how it goes -

I made a 6 ft tall poster of this print for when I sold SneakyArt at the Artist’s Market in Eau Claire in 2019. Isn’t that a great way to attract customers? A couple of people were able to spot themselves on the poster, which earned them a special discount on my book!

This week, I am making zines! For the curious, here is a simple way to make zines.

To win a little zine of SneakyArt, all you have to do is tell me a story:

💭 Step 1: Pick someone in the drawing below.

You can pick one of the people I have already labeled, or someone not labeled (yet). Give them your own label!

🔊 Step 2: Tell me a little story about them.

For example, the older person plant shopping in the bottom middle. I imagine he was sent out on an errand by his partner, to add a dash of green to their living room window. He was reluctant to go out in the cold, but is now enjoying his walk. Our homes can be like cocoons sometimes. Comfortable, but enclosing. We might need a push to go out, but we never regret it afterwards.
