In the previous issue, I spoke about the brief but intense season of Instagram Live sessions. This one is about some lines. It is a SneakyArt Drop. Enjoy!
A haiku is a traditional Japanese three-line poem. In its modern form it has no rules except a syllable count of 5-7-5. Haiku poems focus on emphasizing vivid imagery inside a brief moment, almost as if to compensate for their brevity. Within the confines of their tight form, they nonetheless try to offer a sudden moment of enlightenment, a spark of realization!
As the poet Ezra Pound describes, "The image itself is speech. The image is the word beyond formulated language."
I like to play with words, and the constraints of haiku poetry make for some fun games. Poetry compels us to think about how to say what we want to say. It’s an interesting mental exercise. Have you ever tried writing a haiku?
Give it a shot! Reply to this email with a haiku of your own, based on any of the above drawings. Remember the syllable count: 5-7-5.
Next week, I will share a new episode of the SneakyArt Podcast. It is a conversation with Uma Kelkar, a Silicon Valley engineer and painter/urban-sketcher, about how art helps to balance her life and what it means to “paint like an engineer”.
Paint Like An Engineer with Uma Kelkar, next week!
