Back in the years BC (Before Covid), I liked getting to airports ahead of time. I would find myself a nice seat near the gate, and start to watch out for SneakyArt.
SneakyArt happens spontaneously all over the world. But in hotspots of activity, where worlds collide, you exponentially increase the likelihood for such events.
It is good to be early and alert.
Different people come from different places. But for a brief period of time, we occupy the same space. This is our collective state of limbo; all of us waiting to go somewhere.
I look at the people and feel a sense of kinship. Moving from place to place is, after all, the fundamental human experience.
I also like the time I spend on planes. Every time I am on a plane, I ask myself: To whom does this time belong? Whose extra hours are these, that I win or lose depending on my destination and where I come from? Is it not time travel, in a way?
I value these chunks of time I can snatch from our limited human experience of the universe (even if it’s just on technicality).
It is not that I do anything of great importance. I read. I sleep a little. I just like getting away with time like that.
Time zones are such a fascinating human concept.
SneakyArt is a way to understand and appreciate unfamiliar surroundings. Everywhere I have visited, I have found objects of great beauty and moments of great artistic inspiration. They were right there. They were waiting to be found.
Here are some of those scenes. This is a SneakyArt drop.
The family that gambles together… (on vacation, road-tripping through the American southwest)
At an old bar I used to frequent, in Delft (Netherlands), as a student
Spontaneous jazz as soon as the rainclouds departed, in New Orleans
Same-day tickets to see Madeleine Peyroux at the legendary Opera House of Vienna
Selling comics with Sumit Kumar (of Bakarmax) at the Delhi Comic Con
Last day of a 2017 Euro-trip, on the last page of the travel sketchbook, I spent an hour in the Old Town square of Warsaw.
In Boulder CO, I was official SneakyArtist at the Jaipur Literary Fest in September 2019. They let me sit where I pleased, and watch amazing people drop big knowledge. I would meet them after the sessions, and sometimes I would show them the drawings I made.
This was a SneakyArt Drop. There was no point to it at all. I hope it was fun. Have a good week!
I loved the beginning. Resonated. "Different people come from different places. But for a brief period of time, we occupy the same space. This is our collective state of limbo; all of us waiting to go somewhere"
