Hello, readers. This week, the SneakyArt Podcast turned a year old!
In this issue I want to celebrate this win + reveal my big plans for the future + share the latest episode + offer a peek into my first paid post.
🏆 Help me celebrate with a milestone?
I am on the verge of 1000 free signups to this newsletter, and I think it would be simply amazing to enter my second year as a podcaster with that milestone behind me!
Will you help me reach the magic number by sharing this link with friends?
🎉 One year!
I started the SneakyArt Podcast in Sep 2020 with a simple goal - to stay in touch with urban-sketchers whose work I admired, and continue to learn from them, despite pandemic constraints.
I was nervous to begin, as I always am at the start of a good thing. The only way I get things done is by being passionately curious at the same time. When the curiosity overrides the nerves, things begin to move.
After a year, the math reads:
🎙 25 episodes + 👥 23 guests + 📢 27000+ plays = 😁 1 delighted podcaster
Do you have a favorite episode? Tell me about it in the comments, I would love to talk about it!
💡 Big Plans
With a year of the newsletter and the podcast behind me, I have big plans for the future that I would like to share with you.
I have started a biweekly, subscribers-only edition to this newsletter. Let me tell you about the content it will have, and why it will go behind a paywall.
It is my goal to be 100% supported by my fans, readers, listeners, and followers. I don’t want to work for wealthy patrons, or cater to elite private collections - the traditional paths for an artist seeking success. I don’t want my art to be exclusionary. Instead, the measure of my success will come from sharing my best work with the most number of people.
With the subscription model I offer lots of new content, including -
🎤 bonus commentaries to the SneakyArt Podcast, where I explore some interesting tangents from my conversations with sketchers
📕 passages from my current book-in-progress - SneakyArt of Vancouver
🗣 audio posts about my artistic process
🎉 monthly giveaways of print and original art
It will mean a lot more effort to do these things with the care and attention I like to give my work. This is why I’ve come up with an affordable subscription model to (1) support myself, and (2) build a community of true fans.
The monthly subscription is $5/month. Or two cups of coffee a month.
The annual subscription is $50/year. Or one big meal a year.
Annual subscriptions are further discounted for this week and next. Avail this limited-time offer below!
🙏 This Space
The subscription model does not change my work on this free newsletter. I will continue to share my art, writing, and the podcast with you. I consider it a great privilege that you give me a place in you inbox every week. So thank you!
Even if you should choose to not subscribe, I’d like to offer a free trial of my subscribers-only content. Tap the button to gain access, and you will be able to read the post below and another I have planned for next week.
🎙 Ep 26 - Becoming an Illustrator with Anna Wilson
In the new episode of the SneakyArt Podcast, I speak with urban-sketcher and illustrator Anna Wilson. She is what I describe as a 'deliberate artist', in that she has taken deliberate decisions to chart her life’s trajectory towards art and illustration.
I am always interested in speaking to deliberate artists, because they have such well-considered reasons for the things they do. What does a path of self-education in art look like? How does Anna gather influences, images, and inspirations, to guide her on this path? She tells me how travel shapes her perspective, the lessons she picks from photography and carrying a little sketchbook, and what she carries from her formal education in human geography.
Check out Anna's work on her website or find her on Instagram. Visit here for show notes. Listen to our conversation on your choice of streaming service, or pick a link below:

🎨 The Docks at Granville Island
I completed 3 of 4 pieces for a client in Vancouver. This one featured the docks at Granville Island.
I found a spot to sit across the creek early in the morning. As I began, the sun climbed over the skyscrapers behind me and the first rays glittered against the side of the boats. By the time I was finished, it was mid-morning and the rest of the world had come to life as well.
I shared a short poem with this drawing, as a SneakyArt Drop earlier this week.
Below is a video put together with different clips to chart my progress across the page.
That’s all from me this week. We’re going to the mountains this weekend, which means I’ll have some beautiful art for you in the next one. See you then!
Wow... I need to spend more time here. Love the Granville Island... that's home for me.
