[Insider 36] 5 Tips to Make SneakyArt

notes from a drawing I made this week.

Dear Insider,

Last week, I asked you for advice about putting the SneakyArt Podcast on a weekly schedule, and making other kinds of podcast episodes (not only interview/conversations).

This week I made a drawing at a plaza in Cambie Village. It was a public space created by blocking the main street. A sign at the traffic light forbade any vehicles from taking a right turn while making an exception for bicycles.

An A-frame sign at the street intersection said that the plaza was among several installed throughout this neighbourhood by the merchants and property owners of the Cambie Village Business Association.

There was a large heart-shaped stand against which to lock your bicycle. There were benches and tables, a decorated wall serving as a photo-booth, and … nothing else.

It was just a place by the side of a busy street to sit and to do nothing. I like public places where you can sit and do nothing.

I used this drawing as reference to share some drawing tips on TikTok.

Here they are with some more explanation:

#1 Never show fear before the blank page

Begin the drawing with more confidence than you have. For example, tackle the biggest object of your scene first, so you can draw everything else in reference to it.

#2 Make long lines

Like your handwriting, your long line is unique to you, with its bumps and cuts and slants.
