“Drawing is a way to simplify the things you see and recognize into mere lines and shapes. In that respect, drawing my 11-week old son has one more benefit. It allows me to see him the way he probably sees me - mere lines and shapes. Not knowing me as his father, because he does not yet know what a father is. Not recognizing me as a human, because he does not yet know people either. I am just some lines and shapes, coalescing over days and weeks into a recognizable form.”

This section really stood out to me. Don’t you think those mere lines and shapes are affected by the feelings and knowledge you have?

Absolutely yes. That's what makes them my lines and my shapes, distinct from those by anyone else. In fact, it is very hard to draw a line without making it YOUR line. That is the gift of art. 😊

That's what I thought. Making sure I didn't misunderstand!

Your drawing style and your thoughtful narration work hand-in-hand. It is so wonderful that you have an understanding of the way your little one’s brain is developing as he grows, connections forming, details appearing, pathways being made.

The most amazing part is the speed at which a child’s brain develops! It’s almost like you’re drawing the neurological experience from the inside out. Excellent work!!

Thank you so much! It is truly amazing to see his development. He is seeing us more clearly now and even smiles from across the room. 🥰

Thank you for sharing about the wild wonders conference. I am a science teacher in New Zealand, and I am currently organising a science art competition for a group of primary schools. This conference is a wonderful opportunity for many teachers to learn more and expose students yo a new passion.

What a beautiful bank of work you will have to treasure as he grows. I draw from time to time and have never been as inspired by anything as I have been by my babies - there's just something so pure in how they look when they sleep.

I am just learning to draw in a watercolor class. Your work with the pencil is very clear, starting with the shapes, and then moving to the shadows. Wonderful to watch you work, and your meditative words were lovely. Watching him sleep is such a luxury!

Thank you Nancy! This approach to drawing has been important to me when capturing dynamic scenes of city life. Big shapes then little details. Glad to be of help!

Oh no I made a terrible mistake! It's a discount of $30 but wrote it as a $30 ticket. Brain fog, sorry!
