To Cut or Not to Cut, What Kind of Question is That?
five reasons to linocut, bookplates, our next zoom hangout, book on sale.
Dear Insider,
I was asked recently why I am doing linocut. What do I want from it? How will it aid my creative practice? I came up with five reasons.
❤️ I want to make more things by hand
In this time of cultural colonization by billionaires who produce nothing but plunder everything, working by hand is a way to hold on to my humanity.
❤️ I am challenging myself to think differently
At recent book events, I have been speaking about the neuromuscular processes, the mind-body connections, involved in drawing from observation. To rework a drawing as a linocut carving is a call to initiate new neural signals and thought processes, a chance to work different muscles (creative and literal).
❤️ I am taking time
To double down on process over results, to reset my brain to journey over destination, I must cherish the time spent. If I give it more time, is there more joy to be found?
