114 - Part 2 with Sandi Hester

and a summary of week one of 30 days of vancouver

👋🏼 Hello, reader!

I am delighted to present the second part of my extended conversation with Sandi Hester on the SneakyArt Podcast. Also, a project update after week one of the 30 Days of Vancouver project. And, the results of the first Insider giveaway!

Hello to all new readers! I am glad to have a space in your inbox. Let’s begin today with a short description of the work I am doing.

And if you like having the SneakyArt Post in your inbox, please help me spread the good word.

🙌🏽 Welcome, new readers!

SneakyArt is secretly drawn art of the world, made with a fountain pen inside my sketchbook. I walk about cities and draw my observations of city life from sitting on location - be it a street corner or a park bench.

This month, I am doing the 30 Days of Vancouver project — a daily drawing challenge to explore Vancouver, Canada (my new home!). I discuss my goals and motivations behind the project here.

The most visible — and fun — goal is that I am trying to draw approximately 3000 unique people of Vancouver over the course of 30 days. That is 100 portraits per day for a whole month!

For the duration of April, I am sharing this project with readers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Paying subscribers (SneakyArt Insiders) also get a special Sunday edition with giveaways and other exclusive content!

Catch up with the project here.

🎙 Ep 39 - Part 2 with Sandi Hester

In the second part of this extended conversation, Sandi Hester explains her creative process, her journey across various mediums and tools, and the role of observation in her art.

Find Sandi Hester’s work on Instagram and YouTube.

We had this second half of the conversation the day after the first recording. Because this conversation itself was in two parts, I felt comfortable sharing it in two parts as well. But another reason for doing so is that I want longer episodes to be easier to consume. While I enjoy having long conversations (as I explained last week), I am cognizant of the fact that they can intimidate certain listeners. It is my hope that splitting long conversations will make for a better listening experience! If you have thoughts about this, in agreement or otherwise, please don’t hesitate to reply to this email or let me know in the comments. I would love to hear from you!

📬 Bonus Segment for Insiders

There is actually a third part to our conversation, which was recorded exclusively for SneakyArt Insiders - the readers and listeners who support my work every month.

Sandi and I recorded what I call a Post-Script conversation. Think of it as a long goodbye. We unwind from our long conversation, and tug at some of the remaining loose ends. Often this is the time that the guest feels comfortable asking me questions about my own work.

In this Post Script with Sandi, I asked Sandi to give me advice for getting into YouTube. While I have a YouTube channel, I am not yet a YouTuber. What do I need to begin? Can I do it on a restricted budget of time and money? How can I fit YouTubing into my schedule without upsetting everything else? Sandi gives me some great advice and points to ponder!

The Post Script with Sandi will release on April 17th. To receive it in your inbox, avail this limited time offer to become a SneakyArt Insider!

🎁 First Giveaway of the 30 Days… Project

Last week, I shared some of my favourite TinyPeople drawings with SneakyArt Insiders, asking them to pick one they love, and tell a little story about them.

Here are the THREE winning answers of the first (of 4) Insider giveaways!

Congratulations, Pam and Mary! You each win a signed print of SneakyArt. Please hit reply to this mail and send me your mailing address.

🎉🎺 Congratulations, Peter! You win this week’s giveaway with that wonderful example of blatant-yet-effective flattery. Your prize is an original SneakyArt drawing. Please hit reply to this email and send me your mailing address!

Don’t forget to catch up with the daily notes from 30 Days of Vancouver here. Meanwhile, these are my favourite TinyPeople from Day 7.

Key observation of Day 7 - As the weather changes, so does human behaviour. More people are out to simply enjoy the sun and the warm breeze. More people are happy to meet with others outside, instead of at an indoors location. Of course, in Vancouver such things are not a factor of the season as much as the weather of the particular day. Tomorrow, for example, we are having a thunderstorm. Yay.
